When relational-looking output no longer implies relational understanding

A polished explanation is an artifact to examine, not a transparent window into understanding.

The inference at risk

An explanation can connect concepts fluently. The important question is what evidence licenses a claim about the person who submitted it.

When a learner can obtain a relational-looking explanation from a generative system, the structure of the artifact and the learner’s capacity to generate, defend, or transfer that structure may come apart. This note treats that separation as a research question rather than a settled effect.

Demonstrated is not possessed

The counterfactual benchmark deliberately uses the phrase demonstrated learner reasoning. It asks how a tutor responds to the explanation available to it. It does not establish a learner’s latent understanding.

The distinction limits the claim the benchmark can make. Sensitivity to a written explanation would not by itself prove accurate learner modeling, improved learning, or a diagnosis of understanding.

A more useful observation

One possible response is to ask the learner to predict a specific change, generate a trace, or explain a counterexample. These are candidate observation tasks for an observe-first tutor. Their validity would still need testing.

Why this does not make explanations useless

An explanation remains useful evidence. The point is to specify its provenance and what it supports. The same artifact can be useful for discussing a concept while being insufficient for a claim about independent performance.

Connection to assessment

The issue extends beyond tutoring. If an assessment rewards only the final artifact, it may obscure the process that produced it. The essay on the final answer explores what additional evidence might make understanding more visible.
