Leaving room for judgment

AI advice should make a decision more thinkable without making the thinker disappear.

Advice changes the situation

An AI response enters a decision with an apparent fluency and coherence that can be easy to mistake for authority. The question for this research stream is how a person can use advice while retaining the ability to question its interpretation.

This is not a claim that agreement indicates dependence or that disagreement indicates agency. Either behavior can arise for several reasons. A study needs a more careful account of what the person is able to notice, evaluate, and decide.

Context is not the whole answer

A response can refer to local details and still misread their significance. The person who supplied the context should be able to challenge how it is used. The local knowledge note develops that concern.

A design question

What would an interface look like if it treated the person’s judgment as part of the system’s purpose? It might make uncertainty visible, invite correction, and preserve alternatives. Whether those choices support agency is a question for evidence rather than a design slogan.

The research thread

PICHNET is the current conceptual home for this line of work. Contextual AI systems extend the question toward development settings. Both require concrete protocols before the ideas here can become empirical claims.
